What's the difference between categories, channels, albums and groups?

Categories

The easiest way to structure media is the assignment to a category. Each VIMP medium has to be assigned to at least one category. Multilingual categories can be added and managed in the backend of VIMP.

The initial assignment of a medium to one or more categories has to be made during the upload process. Modifications to the assignment can be made at any time later via the edit medium function.

Categories apply throughout the portal and can be called up directly. Categories basically present a first filter capability of your contents. You can also build up a hierarchical structure with subcategories.

Channels*

Channels represent editorial collections in VIMP that can only be managed by entitled channel administrators or moderators. The assignment of media to a channel takes place in the channel media administration.

Authenticated VIMP users can subscribe to a channel. Whenever a new medium is added to the channel the subscribers will be notified automatically.

Channels can be set to private or public. Contents of private channels are only available for users who subscribed to that channel. Optionally an approval and activation of new subscribers can be activated.

Channels can also be offered with costs optionally (VIMP Ultimate).

Albums*

Albums are designed to create collections on the user level. Each authenticated user can create own albums by default. Albums are suited to create thematically coherent media collections, e.g. for events.

The assignment of media to albums takes place in the album media administration. The visibility of albums can be restricted (only visible for the owner, only visible for friends, visible for everybody).

Groups**

VIMP groups are especially suited to collaborate. By default groups can be created by each authenticated user. The visibility can be set to public or private.

Contents of private groups are only visible for members of that group. Group admission can be requested by the users themselves or be made through an invitation of the group owner. According to the settings, group membership will be granted automatically or only after approval of the group owner.

As a discussion tool a group can contain a group forum where the group members can exchange ideas.
